Regulations

To be ADA compliant, wheelchair accessible vehicles must adhere to a series of regulations set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These regulations include:

Vehicle Doorway Requirements

  • Doorways must have a minimum clear width of 56 inches.
  • The vertical clearance at the doorway must be at least 56 inches for vehicles under 22 feet in length, and 66 inches for larger vehicles.

Ramps and Lifts

  • Ramps must have a maximum slope of 1:6 and be capable of supporting a minimum of 600 pounds.
  • Lifts must be at least 30 inches wide and 48 inches long, with a minimum load capacity of 600 pounds.
  • Both ramps and lifts must be equipped with slip-resistant surfaces and secure edge barriers.

Securement Systems

  • Wheelchair accessible vehicles must have at least two securement locations for wheelchairs.
  • Each securement location must include a minimum of four securement anchor points.
  • Securement systems must be able to withstand a force of 5,000 pounds in any direction.

Seating Requirements

  • There must be at least one forward-facing seat for wheelchair users.
  • Adequate space must be provided to ensure that the wheelchair does not obstruct the path of other passengers.
  • Flooring and Surfaces:
  • Flooring must be slip-resistant and firm.
  • The surface must be stable to allow easy maneuverability of wheelchairs.

Signage and Controls

  • Clear and accessible signage indicating the location of wheelchair spaces and securement systems.
  • Controls and mechanisms for lifts and ramps must be easily reachable and operable with one hand.

Interior Circulation

  • Adequate aisle space to allow movement of wheelchair users.
  • Handrails and stanchions for additional support.
